Greetings from Week in Review again! Today has a lot in store for you, such as a peek at the new Digg, Meta’s smart eyewear, Wix’s most recent acquisition, and much more. Enjoy your weekend!
Smart specs: Meta and Oakley have collaborated to create a new line of smart glasses that can play music, record 3K video, answer calls, and react to Meta AI commands. They cost $399 and last twice as long on a single charge as Meta’s Ray-Bans. On July 11, a limited-edition Oakley Meta HSTN model priced at $499 will be on sale.
Unicorn watch: Base44, a solo firm that had only been around for six months, attracted a lot of interest as a no-code AI tool for creating web apps, and Wix paid $80 million in cash to acquire it. Base44 was founded by a single person and was already profitable. Its quick ascent made it impossible to resist acquiring it.
Sand to the rescue: Finland just activated the largest sand battery in the world, which is really made of real sand. It stores heat to assist power the heating system in the small town of Pornainen and reduce carbon emissions. The low-tech, low-cost system, which is located in a massive silo and is constructed from leftover fireplace soapstone, can retain heat for weeks, demonstrating that sophisticated lithium is not necessary to combat climate change. All you need is a heap of hot rocks.
