Google revealed on Tuesday that it is expanding the AI capabilities of its Chrome web browser. With the use of a new feature called Skills, users will be able to store and utilize their preferred AI prompts on other webpages without having to enter them in again.
The functionality is related to Google’s incorporation of their Gemini AI into Chrome, which came along with a number of new rivals in the browser ecosystem from businesses like The Browser Company (Dia), Perplexity (Comet), and OpenAI (Atlas).
Gemini already enables users to do a variety of tasks, summarize the content on a site, and ask questions about it.By enabling users to develop AI prompts that can be repeatedly accessed with a single click, Skills will go one step further.
For example, Google recommends that if a user frequently asks Gemini to provide vegan alternatives when browsing recipe websites, they can now remember the prompt and utilize it on various websites.
Save the AI prompt as a Skill straight from chat history to utilize the capability. Then, by typing a forward slash (/) or clicking the plus sign (+) button in Gemini in Chrome, the skill can be used again. After that, the Skill will execute on the current webpage and any other tabs that have been chosen.
Google says that these skills are also editable at any time.
In studies, the company discovered that early adopters utilized Skills for things like shopping comparisons, scanning and summarizing long papers, and health and fitness, such as calculating protein macros in recipes.
The business is also introducing a Skills library that will include standard activities and workflows in areas like productivity, shopping, recipes, budgeting, and more to assist consumers in getting started with Skills.Users only need to add one of the preprogrammed skills to their Chrome stored skills in order to use it. By changing the prompt, the skill can also be tailored to the user’s need.
Before performing specific activities, such as sending an email or creating an event to your calendar, Skills will request confirmation from the user, just like other Gemini operations in Chrome.
Today, Chrome desktop users who are logged into their Google account will start to receive Skills. At first, the feature will only function if English (US) is selected as the language in your Chrome browser.
