Promptfoo, an AI security business formed in 2024 to defend LLMs from online threats, was purchased by OpenAI, the company revealed on Monday.
After the transaction complete, Promptfoo’s technology will be incorporated into OpenAI Frontier, the frontier lab’s enterprise platform for AI agents, according to a blog post.
Excitement about increased productivity has been sparked by the creation of autonomous AI bots that carry out digital activities.However, it has also created new avenues for malicious actors to obtain private information or tamper with automated processes.This agreement demonstrates how frantically frontier labs are trying to demonstrate that their technology can be applied securely in crucial commercial processes.
Ian Webster and Michael D’Angelo launched Promptfoo to create tools, such as an open source interface and library, that businesses may use to evaluate security flaws in LLMs. According to the corporation, over 25% of Fortune 500 companies use its products.
According to PitchBook, Promptfoo has only raised $23 million since its start and was valued at $86 million during its most recent round in July 2025. The transaction’s value was not disclosed by OpenAI.
According to OpenAI’s post, Promptfoo’s technology would enable its agent platform to carry out automated redteaming, assess agentic workflows for security issues, and keep an eye on activities for hazards and compliance requirements.Additionally, the business stated that it plans to keep expanding Promptfoo’s open source product.
