A few firms, including Archer Aviation, Beta Technologies, Joby Aviation, and Wisk, will be able to begin extensive testing of electric aircraft as early as this summer thanks to eight pilot programs approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Department of transit Secretary Sean Duffy stated in remarks on Monday that the threeyear program, which will cover 26 states, is intended to guarantee that American businesses set the standard for nextgeneration aircraft utilized for emergency medical care, cargo logistics, personal travel, and regional transit.
In an attempt to expedite the development of the future aircraft, President Donald Trump issued an executive order last year announcing the Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program.
In recent years, a number of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) startups have surfaced, promising to introduce regional electric aircraft and urban air taxis.However, it takes years and hundreds of millions of dollars to get those planes into commercial use.Any new aircraft must go through a multi-year certification process with the FAA.
Despite not having full regulatory certification, these companies will be able to test their eVTOL aircraft thanks to the pilot program.
The efforts and stock prices of other eVTOL firms that have recently gone public, such Archer, Beta, and Joby, could benefit from such an expedited schedule.
According to Kyle Clark, CEO and creator of Beta Technologies, getting accepted into the program will enable the company to begin aircraft operations a year ahead of schedule.Monday saw an almost 12% increase in the company’s stock price.The publicly traded companies Archer and Joby also experienced stock increases.
The eVTOL program will help define a playbook for safely scaling electric air taxis and foster trust, according to Archer, who compared it to robotaxi testing. In addition to helping it become ready for air taxi operations in Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympic Games, the business is working on a four-passenger piloted eVTOL named Midnight.
In a prepared statement, FAA Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau stated, “These agreements will help us better understand how to safely and efficiently integrate these aircraft into the National Airspace System.The training will give participants invaluable operational experience that will help shape the standards required to conduct safe Advanced Air Mobility operations.We are grateful for the numerous suggestions we received, which demonstrate the high level of interest.
Thirty proposals were received, according to the FAA.
But these businesses are not working alone. Companies must collaborate with state, local, tribal, or territorial governments as part of the pilot program.
The projects encompass a number of uses for electric aircraft, such as regional travel and urban air taxis.For example, a dozen operational models, including one based out of a Manhattan heliport, are being tested by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in collaboration with Archer, Beta, Electra, and Joby.
To test regional flights between Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and eventually Houston, the Texas Department of Transportation will collaborate with Archer, Beta, Joby, and Wisk.According to the DOT, this program will involve creating networks of air taxis that will grow from each city to increase regional reach.
Certain projects affect a large geographic area.
For example, a Utahled effort will test a variety of nextgeneration aircraft and operating concepts in the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountains, and the Oklahoma Plains.Another initiative to restore regional flights around the nation will involve 13 states and be spearheaded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
Automation, medical response, and cargo transportation are the focus of other efforts.Cargo and personnel transportation flights into the Gulf of America and to energy-related regions in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi will be tested by Beta, Elroy Air, and other companies.
Additionally, the transportation departments of North Carolina, Louisiana, and Florida are spearheading initiatives.Reliable Robotics and the city of Albuquerque are collaborating to test autonomous operations.
